Article: - Crack down on teenage combination skin

If some parts of your face are oily whilst other bits are normal or dry, welcome to the combination club! Probably not the hottest club in town but don’t worry! The Oy! Team are here to help! Most teenagers with combination skin have an oily forehead, nose and chin – also known as the T-zone – and dry skin on the cheeks and around the eyes and mouth.  If this sounds like you, you’re not alone; combination skin is probably the most common skin type.

You’ll likely experience spots and perhaps acne in the oily areas of your face, as the pores in these areas get clogged up more easily.  In contrast, your cheeks will probably stay relatively free from blemishes, though may get a bit rough and flaky when they are dry.

Help! What can I do about my combination skin?

Unfortunately combination skin isn’t quite as straightforward to look after as all oily or all dry skin since both types require looking after separately.  However, the Oy! organic skin care team have some great tips to help you get your combination skin under control:

-    Wash your face once a day using a gentle, creamy cleanser like Oy! Cleanse and Moisturise, and once a day using a foaming anti-bacterial cleanser like Oy! Foaming Face Wash.  This will keep both skin types happy.

-    Use a toner.  But shhh! Here’s the secret… the Oy! Foaming Face Wash also has a toning effect, helping to close the pores in your T zone (and also saving pennies in your purse!)

-    Use a moisturiser after cleansing.  You should tap it in all over your face (tapping helps it absorb much better) but concentrate particularly on giving dry areas plenty of nourishment.  The moisturising half of the Oy! Cleanse and Moisturise should be a great job (and also saves you having to buy another separate moisturiser, yet another thing that would just clutter up your room (and your make-up bag!)

-    Use a deep-cleansing face mask once a week – we recommend using the Oy! Organic Face Mask with Green Tea to refresh your skin.

-    Try not to use any skin care products which have oil, soap or alcohol content.  Oil can cause pore-clogging problems, whilst soap and alcohol will dry out your skin too much.  You won’t find any of these in Oy! products.

-    Always use warm water rather than hot when you are washing your face.  Very hot water will draw out the natural oils and leave the dry areas of your face feeling horribly parched.

-    Now we know this one’s a bit tough but… try not to use too much makeup. And if you do never ever sleep in it!  Always, always, always cleanse before bed.

-    Drink lots of filtered water.  It may not taste all that interesting but it is great for both your skin and your body! (Check out our page dedicated to reasons to drink it and ways to make water just a little tastier)

-    Eat plenty of leafy greens, fresh fruit and foods rich in omega 3.  Again, this is fantastic fuel for you inside as well as out!  

-    Try to avoid junk food, highly-seasoned and fried food, soft drinks and sugar.  These foods definitely won’t do you or your skin any good.
