Article: - Dealing with teenage dry skin

Dry skin is a really common problem for teenagers, with your hands, arms, legs and face being the most common places to be affected.  According to the clever (but slightly boring) stats people, more than two thirds of girls in the UK suffer with dry skin during the winter so if you’re one of them, you are definitely not alone.

Genetics affect your chances of getting dry skin so if your parents have it, you are more likely to get it as well (another thing to blame the parents for).  You may also have dry skin because of a skin condition such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis.  If you think you do, you’re best off going to your doctor or seeing a specialist dermatologist.  

Most people who have dry skin don’t have any of these though; the chances are that your sebaceous glands simply don’t produce enough oil to keep your skin in optimum condition.  

Help! What can I do about my dry skin?


Whilst there are some things you can’t do much about, like your genetic makeup, there is plenty you can do to keep your dry skin in check.  Environmental factors, diet and your skin care routine can affect the condition of your skin so get these right and your skin should improve.  Here are some tips from the Oy! natural skin care team:

-    Cleanse your face morning and evening with Oy! Cleanse and Moisturise, and use warm rather than hot water to rinse.

-    Once you are all fresh and cleansed, tap in the Oy! Cleanse and Moisturise to give your skin some natural nourishment.  Remember, tapping it in is important as it will stimulate the skin as well as aiding absorption!

-    Use a deep-cleansing mask once a week – we recommend using the Oy! Organic Face Mask with a Mint herbal tea to remove dead skin cells and soothe your skin.

-    Every now and again have a reviving facial massage using a balancing oil.  This will help to stimulate your skin and prevent dryness.

-    Shower only once a day otherwise you risk dehydrating your skin even further.  Again, avoid using really hot water as it will parch your skin of its natural oils.  

-    Pat yourself down with a towel, rather than rub, and gently rub natural body lotion into skin to lock in moisture.

-    Avoid using alcohol- and soap-based skin care products on your skin, as they will leave it even dryer.  Instead, choose natural products, like the Green People's yummy Limited Edition Organic Wash & Shave, as these are much kinder to the skin.

-    Try not to spend time in very warm or air conditioned rooms, as these will suck up moisture from your skin.  To get more moisture in the air, place a bowl of water next to a radiator.

-    Pay extra attention to your skin in winter, when it is likely to be at its driest.  

-    Drink plenty of filtered water and herbal teas.  Your skin needs lots of hydration so this is just the thing for it – plus it is good for you!  Read more about water.

-    Get lots of Vitamin A (carrots, broccoli, leafy veg), C (oranges, red peppers, blackcurrents), E (asparagus, avocado, nuts, seeds) and B5 (wheat germ, sunflower seeds)

-    Avoid junk food, highly-seasoned and fried food, soft drinks and sugar.  Tempting though they may be, they won’t do much good for dry skin.
