Article: - Getting a grip on greasy teenage hair!

Greasy hair is such a pain; the curse of so many teenage lives. You wash it, and just a few hours later it looks like it needs washing again.  Arghh!  You can’t spend all day shampooing so what is the best way to treat greasy hair, without resorting to that ever faithful hat or worse still… the paper bag.

The Oy! organic hair care team can sympathise with those of you battling the grease, some of us still being teenagers, and we have a few tips which might help you out.

Why is my hair so greasy?

Once again it’s those teenage hormones that are the guilty party being behind the curse of the grease.  They increase the amount of sebum being produced by glands on your scalp, which then is transferred to your hair.  Really sebum is good stuff, protecting your hair from damage, but too much of it gives means that you end up with that slicked back, oily look, and nobody wants to look like they’re an extra just stepped off the set of Grease the Musical.

Putting greasy hair completely down to teen hormones is a little bit simplistic though.  People of all ages can have hair that tends towards being oily rather than dry or normal, and this is down to a number of things, including genetics (another thing to blame the parents for), diet (all that “you are what you eat” stuff) and the type of hair care products they use.  Having said that, you’ll probably find your hair gets less greasy once you are out of your teens, so now you do have something to look forward to when you get old!  

Is there anything I can do about it?

Fed up with your greasy hair?  Don’t worry, there’s plenty you can try!  Here are some ideas:

-    Be nice to your hair, even if its not always nice to you.  Wash it thoroughly with a mild, natural shampoo every day – we recommend Green People's organic Rosemary shampoo, which will cleanse your hair of the grease factor but give it natural moisture to keep it healthy.

-    Don’t use a conditioner (unless you have dry ends and then you should only apply it to these).  Your body is already doing what a conditioner does so there’s no need to put more on!

-    Don’t let your scalp get too hot, as this encourages it to produce more sebum.  This means washing in cooler water than usual and not getting the hair dryer too close.

-    Don’t brush your hair too often and try not to play with it, so girls, no crazy hair flicking in front of the guy you fancy, okay?!  Again, messing around with your hair will stimulate your scalp and encourage more sebum production, resulting in that oh so attractive Elvis look, (do avoid if you don’t have the Elvis moves to match).

-    Eat healthily and drink plenty of water (the all powerful cure for everything!)  Not only will doing so give your body the fuel it needs to keep you well, you’ll also be giving your skin and hair a helping hand.
