Article: - Put a stop to that flaky or itchy scalp!

Obviously having a flaky or itchy scalp isn’t fun for anyone, but it’s particularly hard to live with when you are a teenager trying to cope with everything else that’s going on in your head as well as what’s going on on your head.  Coping with itchiness is enough to drive anyone to their limits, and worse, it is often accompanied by flaking.

So how to go about putting an end to the itching that’s driving you mad and the flakes that just don’t seem to stop?  The Oy! organic hair care team has some suggestions.

Why is my scalp so flaky and/or itchy?

Flaking occurs when the scalp loses more dead skin cells than usual and they aren’t removed when you brush or wash your hair.  If you have flakiness without the itching, the chances are you probably just have dandruff.  This is most common in people with oily hair, which means lots of teenagers get it. Great.

The main thing many itchy scalps are caused by a reaction to a very common ingredient in high street shampoos – Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulphate (SLS).  This is what gives them their foaminess. It is also frequently found in toothpastes and you may experience mouth ulcers and soreness if you are sensitive to it.  Simply avoiding all the products with this ingredient in them will make a huge difference to your itchy scalp, that’s if SLS is the cause of your problem.

However, SLS isn’t the only thing that can cause an itchy scalp.  Skin conditions such as seborrhoeic eczema and scalp psoriasis also cause itchiness and flaking.  Seborrhoeic eczema produces greasier, yellowy flakes whilst scalp psoriasis is characterised by red patches with silver scales.

Is there anything I can do about the flaking and itchiness?

Yep!  Here are some tips for teenagers with scalp problems from the Oy! organic hair care team:

-    Ditch your chemical shampoo and wash thoroughly with one of Green People's great organic shampoos.  Choose one that doesn’t contain SLS and has lots of natural ingredients to cleanse and nourish your scalp and hair.  You may wish to shampoo twice to help get rid of all the flakes.

-    Gently massage your scalp when you shampoo your hair – but don’t scratch.  This will help to loosen flakes without leaving your scalp damaged.

-    If you have a flaky, greasy scalp you may also like to massage your scalp with jojoba oil.  This calms the sebaceous glands in your scalp which release too much sebum.

-    Tea tree and manuka oil can also be helpful in reducing the bacteria which cause dandruff.

-    Avoid using styling products wherever possible, as these may cause build-up and itching.

-    Some scalp conditions are persistent so don’t be disappointed if the flakes don’t disappear forever – you’re best off keeping on top of them.

-    Have a healthy diet and drink plenty of water.  Increase your Omega 3 & 6 intake – but remember to keep it balanced!  Read more about Omega 3 & 6.

-    Visit your doctor if you aren’t having any success with these suggestions.
