Article: - Split from those split ends!

ARGH!! Split ends!  A problem at any age, this one’s not just for teenagers. So you better listen up as their not going away!  They are tough to prevent and once their there, the only way to deal with them is to get them cut off. Pretty dramatic action, but how do you go about stopping them forming in the first place?

Why do I keep getting split ends?

There are loads of reasons for split ends.  Firstly, hair which is dry or brittle is more prone to developing split ends as the hair strands aren’t able to cope with much stress before splitting.  If you have this type of hair, your first stop should be helping to nourish it so that it becomes stronger and healthier.  Read about tips for teens with dry hair.

The other main category of reasons for split ends is that the hair is regularly damaged.  There are lots of forms of damage so here are just a few: blow drying, curling irons, straightening irons, colouring products, harsh chemical shampoos, vigorous brushing when your hairs wet, air conditioning and other environmental effects, chlorine and use of poorly-made hair accessories.  

Is there anything I can do about it?

It is worth noting that everyone will develop split ends eventually if they don’t have their hair cut, no matter how nicely they treat it.  However, there is plenty you can do to reduce the number of split ends you get and how quickly they form.  

Here are some of our natural hair care tips for preventing split ends:

-    Wash your hair using one of Green People's yummy organic shampoos.  These are filled with nourishing goodness to feed dry, damaged hair and don't contain any harsh chemicals.  If you have dry hair, you probably only need to wash it once or twice a week. Luckily for you though, you don’t have the grease factor to worry about!

-    Condition your hair whenever you wash it – we recommend the organic conditioners from Green People (scroll down the page to find them).  Concentrate especially on massaging it into the ends, which will help to keep them strong and healthy.

-    Do a regular ‘deep condition’ by leaving the conditioner in your hair for half an hour or so before rinsing thoroughly.

-    Don’t brush your hair whilst it is very wet as it is at its most delicate – use a wide-toothed comb instead.

-    Gently towel-dry your hair and squeeze with the folds of the towel rather than rub – and let it drip dry instead of blow drying.  

-    Try not to use any hot styling tools or colour on your hair.  But… if you're one of those people who can’t live without their straighteners, keep them on as cool a setting as possible.

-    Have your hair trimmed regularly -  monthly hair cuts could get a bit pricey so why not ask your mum or a friend to just trim the ends off? (BUT! You must have complete trust in your friend – or mum!)

-    Use hair pins with smooth ends and hair ties without the metal joins, as these will be kinder to your hair than the sharp and scratchy alternatives.

-    Have a healthy diet and drink plenty of water (Yes that one again).  This will help your hair to grow stronger and be less likely to split.
