Diet Tips

Article: - Avoiding dodgy digestion!

Embarrassing burps, painful heartburn and uncomfortable bloating – all highly awkward stuff that we’d quite like to avoid! But they are all connected with how our body processes food, so improving your digestion, and you'll banish the burps and the bloating.

Considering that eating is something that we spend most of our lives doing, (some more so!) we are surprisingly bad at it!  So here are some easy, natural ways to help you on your way to a satisfied stomach:

-    Only have warm or room temperature drinks with your meals.  If you have an ice cold glass of water or coke, it will have a numbing effect on your stomach muscles, making them work less effectively. If someone poured a bucket of icy water over you, would you really want to do much to help them out?!

-    Eat your meals in order of ‘digestibility’.  Have a drink before your meal, if possible, rather than during it, as drinks digest quickest.  When it comes to food, vegetables digest quicker than meat so by eating them first, you’ll make more room more quickly.

-    Chew your food thoroughly and try not to swallow large pieces of food. Chewing produces more saliva (i.e. spit), which contains enzymes that help to break down food more easily. Bulky pieces of food are difficult and uncomfortable to digest, so try not to cram as much in as possible!

-    Eat slowly. Interesting fact! It takes a while for your brain to catch up with how full you actually are and so it can feel like you are still hungry when in fact you aren’t.  By eating slowly you will feel you need to eat less, as well as making digestion easier on your stomach.

-    On a similar note, don’t overeat.  Your stomach needs to move food about whilst it is digesting it, and it can be quite uncomfortable if it doesn’t have any space in which to do so. (Think of it like people in a room at a party, you don’t want to pack the room so full that people can’t move around and enjoy themselves, just like the food in your stomach wants to party in your tummy!)

-    Take meals at regular times.  It can be tough if you’re busy and rushing all over the place, but try to make a few minutes to eat similar meals at the same time each day.  Your stomach loves routine and regularity, and you’ll feel better for it.

-    Don’t eat last thing at night.  Apart from the fact going to bed on a full stomach is seriously uncomfortable, your horizontal position and slower body rhythm mean digestion takes much longer and can disturb your sleep. You don’t want to be woken up by your own tummy rumbling!

You may be trying to eat more healthily at the moment – if so, take a look at the tips in our ‘5 a day’ article.  However, also remember that digestion is all part of the process of eating healthily, as good digestion means that you will get more nutrients from your food.

It doesn’t take much effort to change some of your eating habits along with your diet, so why not give it a go and see if you can actually feel the differences? You might be surprised…
