Article: - Get a brilliant brain & body with Omega 3&6
Why should I eat Omega 3 & 6?
If you have no idea what Omega 3 & 6 are, we aren’t surprised – lots of people don’t know what they are. However, we do, and we want to share all their greatness with you as they can come in pretty handy – especially for improving your memory for exams!
Omega 3 & 6 are two families of unsaturated fatty acids. Okay so we know that doesn’t make them sound very attractive… fat? acids?! But they are actually surprisingly good for you!
Why are they so good for me?
Ok so the scientific part…Omega 3 and 6 are vital nutrients which help to create hormones that our bodies need to work properly. One particular type of Omega 3 helps us to develop our brains, our eyes and our immune system. However, as well as all this inner health stuff, you’ll also be glad to hear that there are some benefits you can actually see, too – the Omegas help to moisturise the skin from the inside out, making it super smooth and silky!
We’re often told that everything in life is a balance… our parents tell us to balance going out and studying; we have to balance spending time with our friends and our boy/girlfriends, and this is also the case with Omega 3 and 6. If they are out of balance, your body won’t be able to feel their benefits properly… but get the right balance, and you should be remembering more, concentrating better and even your mood will improve (although we can’t promise a miracle personality transplant!)
Getting enough Omegas
Our bodies can’t produce either of these Omegas so we have to make them part of our diet. The healthy balance is 3:1 - meaning three Omega 6 to every one Omega 3.
Omega 3 can be found in:
- Sardines, herring, tuna, salmon and mackerel
- Walnuts, flaxseed oil, soya and leafy green vegetables
Omega 6 can be found in:
- Evening primrose oil, flaxseed oil, blackcurrant seed oil
- Soya, corn and sunflower oil
The experts reckon that we should eat one portion of oily fish, like those mentioned above, a week in order to get enough of it. It can be supplemented with other sources as well though.
If you decide to try sorting out your Omega 3 & 6 balance, try to choose the organic option wherever possible. Pesticides and other chemicals used on crops tend to gather in the oils but going organic means that you won’t be putting these in your body too.
