Article: - What to eat (and not) to get rid of acne

Ok, so you want to tackle your acne and say goodbye to all those harsh acne creams.  Improving your diet is a great place to start because as well as helping your skin, it will do your general health good too. 

Below we have put together some ideas of what (and what not) to eat to get rid of your acne. You may look down the list and think “I can’t do all this!” Don’t worry - try making just a few changes to start with and you’ll be going in the right direction. 

What you should eat:

-    Oily fish, pumpkin seeds and primrose oil.  Whilst these don’t sound the most appetising of foods, they contains Omega 3 & 6 oils which work together to nourish hair, skin and nails – so they are worth it really!  Read more about Omega oils.

-    Omega oils also help your body to absorb vitamins and minerals, which is handy considering that some of these can help to reduce acne.  So if you are eating omega oils, make sure that your fruit and veg intake is also good (in particular eat plenty of broccoli, cabbage, onions and garlic) to make the most of the beneficial effects!

-    Vitamin A is really good if you have acne skin because it reduces oil production as well as helping to repair damaged skin tissue.  You’ll find it in yummy fruits like mangoes, peaches, tomatoes and apricots, in addition to spinach, sweet potatoes and kale. 

-    Zinc is also a great mineral for combating acne, as it acts as an antioxidant (fighting skin damaging cells) as well as helping the skin to heal.  Foods such as pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts, poultry and seafood contain zinc, as well as egg yolks and wheatgerm (found in wholegrain bread and cereal). 

-    Other minerals to look out for are magnesium, selenium and chromium which aid healing and reduce soreness.

What you shouldn’t eat (this is the hard bit):


-    Sugar
-    Salty foods
-    Processed foods
-    Deep-fried and fatty foods
-    Caffeine
-    Chocolate
-    Cow’s milk and cheese
-    Oranges and orange juice

In addition to thinking about what you eat, thinking about how and when you eat might also help you in finding a chemical-free acne solution.  Poor digestion can mean you get ‘clogged up’, which isn’t too great for your skin. Read our tips on how to avoid dodgy digestion.
