Article: - Can’t sleep? Tips for nodding off at 2am

Wide awake when you should be asleep?

We all know not being able to get to sleep can be really annoying, especially if you know you have to be up ridiculously early in the morning for lessons or lectures… we’ve all been there, done that, fallen asleep in class... Most of us have issues sleeping sometimes, but when counting sheep just isn’t working for you, what should you do?

-    Get up and do something really boring for a while. (Tidy your room or something! Then not only is it energetic and will tire you out, it will also leave your day nag-free from parents finding those dirty plates and mouldy sandwiches) There’s no point tossing and turning about in bed trying to get to sleep, as your mind and/or body just isn’t ready yet, so don’t push it! Go back to bed only when you are feeling sleepier.

-    Write down all the things on your mind, whether they’re worries or simply everything you need to get sorted tomorrow.  You’ll find your mind will stop buzzing much easier that way.

-    Fix anything that is stopping you from sleeping.  If your computer light is flashing at you or the room is too hot or cold, take some action! You’ll feel satisfied with having done something about what was stressing you out and you’ll be able to finally relax.

…and what shouldn’t you do?

-    Don’t eat, drink or smoke out of boredom.  If you do this a couple of nights in a row, your body will think it is getting a treat and will start to expect it on a nightly basis.  A midnight snack isn’t a great habit to get into, especially when you stay over at a friend's and get caught in the fridge at 3am!

-    Don’t read a good book or watch TV.  Anything that gets your mind working overtime isn’t going to help you to wind down and sleep and will probably have you staying up even longer. But let’s be honest your history text book or a good nature documentary probably will do you some good in helping you get to sleep pretty quickly.

-    Don’t turn on a bright light.  Though there isn’t much you can do in the semi-dark, turning on a bright light will only make you feel even more awake.  Your brain will think it is dawn and time to get up!    

-    Don’t watch the clock.  Knowing that you have only 4 hours in which to make the most of your sleep will only make you more on edge.  Instead turn your alarm clock or mobile away from you so you can’t see it.
