Article: - Effects of anorexia and bulimia

Although anorexia and bulimia are mental disorders, they are completely linked with the body.  Teens with these illnesses spend so much time focused on their body that they do not realise the major harm that their obsession is doing to themselves.

Our bodies are not equipped for starvation or a binge/purge cycle and there is a huge range of effects that can result from bulimia and anorexia.  The seriousness of the anorexia or bulimia generally determines how badly the body is affected, and the longer the illness goes on then the more serious the effects on the body.  

It is a tragic fact that death can be the eventual outcome of these eating disorders, resulting from around 2 to 3% of cases.

Anorexia
The main problem with anorexia is that the body has to do what it always needs to do, but with hardly any calories. There isn’t enough energy being put in for the body to be able to do everything, so some things it needs to do end up suffering…   

Here are some of the most common effects of anorexia:

-    Constantly feeling cold
-    Dry, yellowish skin which bruises easily
-    Brittle hair and nails
-    Thinning hair
-    Restlessness and insomnia
-    Dizziness, fainting and headaches
-    Loss of periods (amenorrhea)
-    Abdominal pain and constipation
-    Irregular heartbeat
-    Feel weak and lacking energy
-    Kidney stones

Bulimia
The types of purging which bulimics use will influence how their bodies are affected.  Those who make themselves sick will have more dental and throat problems, whilst those who use laxatives will get bowel problems.

-    Tooth decay and mouth sores
-    Constant sore throat
-    Broken blood vessels in the eyes
-    Swollen cheeks and salivary glands
-    Swollen hands and feet
-    Weakness and dizziness
-    Loss of periods
-    Scarring on the back of the hands
-    Loss of periods (amenorrhea)
-    Irregular heart beat
-    Irregular bowel movements
-    Constipation
-    Abdominal pain
