Article: - How does exam stress affect you?

Ugh, exams!  We all have to take them and we all hate them.  The run up to exams can be incredibly stressful – probably more so than at any other time growing up.  It is perfectly natural to feel anxious; there aren’t many who haven’t felt butterflies in their tummy as exam time approaches.

Common worries include going blank when you turn over the question paper and whether you can do well enough to get the grades you want.  However, exam stress affects everyone differently, and you may find yourself worrying about things other than the upcoming tests.

Signs of exam stress

It may well be the first time you have felt nervousness to this degree so here are some tips to help you recognise when you are getting stressed:

-    Aching muscles and general tiredness. You may find it harder than usual to get up in the morning and to get into the right mindset for learning.

-    Getting irritated or upset easily. You may take your emotions out on your family or friends, or burst into tears at the slightest thing.

-    Having panic attacks.  At times you may feel suddenly overwhelmed with intense anxiety, which may last for around 15 to 30 minutes and is very upsetting.

-    Having an upset stomach.  Stress can cause your body to produce too much stomach acid, which can make you feel sick or make you need the loo more often.

-    Having a fast heart beat.  You may feel that your heart is thumping very hard, but this is a normal sign of stress.  However, if you have existing heart problems or your symptoms worry you, get help.

-    Feeling on edge.  You may feel jittery and unable to concentrate on your work, or even that you cannot sit down for long.

-    Experiencing itchy skin and rashes.  Stress can visibly affect your skin, and worsen existing conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.  Try to look after your skin with Oy! organic skin care products to reduce the effects.
