Sleeping under stress

Exam time is stressful for everyone and it can be a nightmare to get to sleep when you have to face them in the morning.  Here are our tips for having a super-relaxing evening and refreshing sleep to get you on top form:

-    Eat a nice, healthy dinner early on, ideally with some Omega 3 & 6 in, for extra brain food!  By eating early, you will give your body time to finish digestion so you won’t feel uncomfortable when you lie down.

-    Get everything ready for the morning and put your text books and notes out of sight.  Stop with the last minute revision! Just let it go! Its pointless trying to cram and will only stress you out more and the last thing you want is a reminder of your exams wherever you look.

-    Say good luck to all your friends then turn your mobile and computer off.  There is nothing like other people panicking (or acting like they are totally prepared) to make you feel really nervous!

-    About two hours before you want to fall asleep, have a nice hot bath. Relax and try to slow down from the day. Don’t have a shower though, as that will wake you up rather than relax you.

-    Wrap yourself up in a nice fluffy dressing gown (the fluffier the better) and spend a little while pampering yourself with our Peel Off Face Mask. Now you actually have an excuse to lock yourself away in the bathroom!

-    Make yourself a cup of chamomile tea or another type of herbal drink as the last thing you want is caffeine to keep you up, running around the house all night.  Warm milk can also be great at helping you sleep as it encourages production of serotonin, a chemical in the brain which makes you feel sleepy and also helps to elevate your mood, (so warm milk = happy and sleepy, just like when you were little) However, a lot of people are allergic to cow’s milk so if you suspect this might be the case for you, just stick with the chamomile tea.

-    Take your warm drink up to bed with you, stick some soooooothing music on at low volume and turn the lights down.  If you don’t have a dimmer switch, turn on a lamp with a low wattage bulb.  Then chill out on your bed.

-    Once you have finished your drink, you should be feeling pretty relaxed and sleepy.  Turn off the lights and music, then drift off…zzzzzzzzzzzz

Everyone is different when it comes to how much sleep they need, but most people up to the age of around 21 need a good 9 or 10 hours (although honestly how many of you actually get that?)  Make sure you allow this much when you plan your ultra-relaxing evening.  If this means you have to go to bed earlier than usual, you’ll probably find it helpful to start going to bed at that time a few days in advance, so your body gets used to it.
