Why do I get acne?

You can have acne whatever age you are, but as you probably know, it is a condition which particularly affects those in their teens and early 20s – cruel huh? It is really common, affecting 9 out of 10 teenagers to some degree. Developing acne can be a real blow to your confidence as it is only natural to want to look your best all the time, but try not to worry too much because it does go, and there is plenty you can do to help control it.

But what causes acne?

Teenage acne develops because of the changes going on in your body. The levels of oil (sebum) being produced go up, and the pores on your skin get blocked by a combination of this oil and dead skin cells. Blocked pores show themselves as those dreaded blackheads and whiteheads, and also cause small pimples when oil gets stuck in them.

Bigger spots are a sign that they may be infected with acne bacteria. We all have acne bacteria on our skin, which live there without causing any problems most of the time, but blocked pores provide the perfect conditions for them to breed. When lots get together in a pore, your immune system will react and turn on them, causing pus and inflammation of the surrounding skin.

Acne myths!

Many people don’t know what causes acne and can jump to the wrong conclusions. Here are our reactions to some of the commonly held beliefs about acne:

-   You can catch it by contact. Wrong! Everyone has acne bacteria on their skin but if the conditions aren’t right, they aren’t a problem.

-   Acne is caused by poor hygiene. Wrong! Dirt is not the cause of acne and washing more won’t make it go away – in fact washing too much can cause your skin to produce even more oil!

-   There is nothing you can do about it. Wrong! The right diet and the right skin care regime can help you to get your acne under control, although it may not disappear altogether.
