Mineral oil (Paraffinum Liquidum) is a by-product of the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline and other petroleum based products from crude oil – other related names are paraffin and petroleum jelly.

Why does the cosmetic industry use mineral oil?
This oil is the most inexpensive ingredients available for cosmetic use – it is easy to formulate with as the oil has no odour and doesn't spoil. Mineral oil is used in more than 2/3 of all skin care products from cheap cosmetics to baby, teenage products and even in expensive designer brands.

Mineral oil – like wrapping your skin in cling-film!
Being all natural (derived from crude oil) doesn’t necessarily mean good news for your skin especially if you suffer from spots and acne. Mineral oil doesn’t contain any nutrients, whereas plant oils has valuable properties, e.g. Rosehip oil is high in Linoleic and Linolenic essential fatty acids reducing scars and repairing damaged skin cells, Sunflower oil is a light oil offering valuable nutrients such as vitamin E and essential fatty acids.

Your skin cannot absorb mineral oil; the oil covers your skin causing your skin to suffocate by not letting it breathe naturally – just like wrapping your face in cling-film!

Clogging your pores results in a slower ability to eliminate toxins, dirt and bacteria get trapped and you end up with even more problems with spots and acne.

Choosing cosmetics for acne prone skin
