Here are some things to check out next time you go shopping to make sure you avoid some of the major nasties:
Synthetic fragrances/perfume – added to nearly all skin and hair care products, these are a major cause of allergic reactions because they are made from synthetic chemicals.
Oy! promise: We use blends of pure, organic essential oils, so you are less likely to suffer allergic reactions.
Preservatives – another big cause of irritation, as all creams and lotions need protection from the growth of bacteria. But some preservatives used in highstreet brands release small amounts of the irritant and neurotoxin formaldehyde, or act like Oestrogen to disrupt hormone levels!
Oy! promise: We use gentle, natural preservatives to protect the product and they don’t harm you.
Emollients – are the oily element of the product. They help to soothe and protect your skin but in high street brands are made using silicones and paraffin wax, mineral oil/petrolatum from crude oil. These do not allow your skin to breathe or get rid of toxins – it is just like wrapping it in cling-film! They are also non-biodegradable = spoil our planet!
Oy! promise: We only use pure, organic oils and butters; such as jojoba, olive, rosehip and hemp oils, and shea butter to nourish and care for your skin.
Detergents – used in products like face washes and shampoos to clean your skin and hair. Harsh detergents such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), strip away the skin’s natural protective oils.
Oy! promise: We use mild, non-irritating foaming agents made from coconut and corn.
Colourants – synthetic colours can cause allergic skin reactions; some contain heavy metals and may be carcinogenic. High street stuff: Avoid the following coal-tar dyes: (CI 42090), (CI 16185) (CI 45430), (CI 19140), (CI 15985).
