Teenage cosmetics could cause risk to girls' health - 11 January 2010
Make-Up Risk for Teenage Girls
Teenage girls who wear make up from a young age could be risking their health due to the cocktail of chemicals that are found in many make-up brands, according to The Environmental Working Group. The studies found that some of the chemicals in teenage cosmetics, including phthalates, triclosan, parabens and musks, may lead to health effects such hormone disruption.
The study showed that teens typically use on average 17 cosmetics a day as they are experimenting with different products, whereas adults only use on average 12 products daily. Therefore teens are exposing themselves to higher levels of cosmetic ingredients at a time when their bodies are more susceptible to chemical damage as their brains and bodies are still developing.
Campaigner Stacy Malkan said: "By the time most girls become teenagers many have a daily make-up ritual.
"As the layers add up so does exposure to dangerous chemicals, and that's very bad news for a young girl's health."
